Week 10 - Provincials
STEELERS ARE THE TIER 3 PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONS!!
In the second quarter, quarterback Ben Pasiuk, handed off to Jesse Helmer,
who ran up the middle for a gain of 4 yards. Pasiuk then attempted a pass to
Gordie Walls, but the ball fell short for an incompletion, and 3rd & 6. The
next play saw receiver, Zach "Chicken" Morgan, go long and he grabbed a
perfect pass from Pasiuk, for a 33 yard pass reception, and a first down in
Bulldogs territory. Then Pasiuk went back to Helmer, for an 8 yd run to 2nd
& 2. Graydon "Monster" Perrott then took the ball from Pasiuk, and ran to
the outside, where he was tackled, and taken out of bounds at the Bulldogs
15 yd line. However, on the tackle, the Bulldogs defender was penalized for
a facemask, and the ball was spotted on the Bulldogs 1 yard line. Pasiuk
then went to Monster for the carry, and he punched it in for the touchdown.
Owen "Smitty" Smith then kicked the conversion for two more points. Both
teams went back and forth, with no big gains, until a Steeler 3rd & 11, on
the Bulldogs 42 yd line. The Steelers punted away, with the Bulldogs number
55 receiving the ball. He was run down to the outside of the field, where he
somehow broke back towards the middle. The Steelers defense was taken by
surprise, as the runner made a break for the opposite corner in the Steeler
end, where he made another quick fake on a Steeler defender. Then he had
nothing but open field for the last 20 yards, and ran in for the touchdown,
with the runback totaling 84 yards. The Bulldogs kicker then made good on
the conversion kick. At the end of the quarter, it was a tie game at 8-8.
In the third quarter, the Steelers defense came to the realization that if
they wanted to win this game, that they could not allow any more mistakes,
like the one that resulted in the Bulldogs touchdown. So, they came out with
a renewed determination. The Steelers offense, also showed that they wanted
the win more than anything else. They went back to work almost immediately.
With a first down on their own 49 yard line, Helmer ran up the middle for a
4 yard gain. Pasiuk then handed of to Monster, who ran for 5 more yards for
3rd & 1, on the Bulldogs 53 yard line. On the next play, Pasiuk could not
find the intended runner, in a bobbled hand off attempt. He then called his
own number, and made his way to the outside. Kayden "BBQ" Hall, then made an
incredible block, which opened up the field for Pasiuk to run to the
Bulldogs endzone for a 53 yard touchdown run.
The Bulldogs then showed some life after the ensuing kickoff. They were
finally able to get a little bit of their run game going, with a few good
gains, and a couple of first downs. However, they fumbled the ball, and lost
possession with the Steelers recovering on their own 9 yard line. The
Steeler offense was unfortunately not able to move the ball from their own
end, and gave the ball back to the Bulldogs, on the Steelers 11 yard line.
Pinned deep, the Steeler defense came back in. The Bulldogs, number 22
carried the ball to the Steeler 1 yard line for a first down. Then the
defense showed why they were so feared all season. The Bulldogs, went again
to number 22, and he was stopped cold for no gain for 2nd & goal. Then
the Steelers pushed the Bulldogs back for a loss of one on the next carry,
for 3rd & goal. With a touchdown in their grasp, the Bulldogs went once more
to number 22, where he met a wall of Steelers defenders, and came up short
of the score. The defense had done the nearly impossible, and shut down the
Bulldogs, with an amazing goal line stand! The offense took over, and made
a run, then the quarter ended....16-8.
The fourth quarter, once again saw a defensive battle. Both teams went back
and forth, and play was very tight, with few mistakes by either team. With
less than a minute to play, the Steelers were in possession on 3rd down, and
made a fumble. The ball bounced through the legs of a Bulldogs defender as
he attempted to pick it up, and another Bulldog just missed it as well.
Smitty was finally able to pounce on the loose ball, saving what would
have likely been a Bulldogs touchdown, as the only other players near were
wearing gold jerseys. The ball turned over to the Bulldogs. As the clock
wound down, the crowd was on their feet. The Bulldogs made a short gain,
then another, and the whistle blew with 0.3 seconds left. The Bulldogs had
one more play to go. If they could make good on the last pass, and score, it
would force the game into overtime. The Bulldogs quarterback took the snap,
and dropped back. As he was looking for his intended receivers, his pass
protection began to break down. He scrambled back a little more, as Bryce "Pinky"
Maki chased him down. The quarterback then brought back his arm, looking to
make his pass. Just then, Pinky grabbed jersey, and spun the Bulldogs
quarterback around, hauling him to the field. With that tackle, the game was
sealed, and the Steelers were the champs!!
What an end to such an exciting game, and season! Congratulations to all the
boys who played their hearts out all year! Good luck to the veterans who are
moving on in their football careers! Thank you to the coaches who have
invested so much time, and effort into teaching our boys this great game!
One more thank you, to the parents who have let their boys be a part of
something so special! We will hopefully see ALL of our rookies next year, as
they come back to defend their championship!! GO STEELERS!!!
Week 9
THE RED DEER STEELERS ARE THE 2009 CENTRAL PEE WEE FOOTBALL LEAGUE
CHAMPIONS!
With the sun shining bright, the fall weather was perfect for today's game
at Great Chief Park. The visiting Olds Huskies, came to town to meet the
Steelers, with the League Championship on the line. Both teams proved that
they were more than worthy to play in this game, but the Steelers prevailed
in the end, with a final score of 24-0!
The first and second quarters, were definitely the best defensive, and
exciting quarters of the entire season. The Steelers, and the Huskies
hammered on each other, with neither team really taking any ground. The
Steelers' defense was amazing! With the exception of one sack, coming early
in the second, there was no real standout play or standout player, because
they were working so cohesively together, and moving as one unit. On
offense, quarterback Ben Pasiuk, once again used all his offensive weapons,
yet the scoreboard remained empty when the horn sounded to end the half. It
was turning out to be an exciting defensive showdown!
In the third quarter, the Huskies' received the kickoff. On the first play
of the drive, linebacker Jesse Helmer, hammered the Huskies' running back in
the backfield, putting Olds to 2nd & 15, on their own 35 yd line. On the
next play, the Huskies then fumbled the ball, and the Steelers recovered on
the Olds 31. Then Pasiuk, and his troops went back to work. "Monster" Perrot
ran for 7 yds, then another 2, to make 3rd & 1, at the Huskies' 22 yd line.
Pasiuk again handed off to "Monster" who ran up the gut, to gain the first
down on the Huskies' 16. Then Pasiuk mixed up the offense, and went with "Smitty"
Smith, who carried 7 yds, for 2nd & 3. "Monster" then ran up the middle, for
first & goal on the 2 yd line. Within striking distance, Pasiuk moved them
up to 2nd down and a short 1. Again, "Monster" took the ball, and rumbled in
for the first score of the game. "Smitty" put the magic green shoes to use,
and the conversion kick was good. On the kickoff Olds fumbled the return,
which was recovered by the Steelers. Then on the ensuing drive, the Huskies
once again put up some excellent defense, effectively shutting down the
Steelers, taking over on their own 30 yd line. Then Olds made some costly
mistakes, first by taking a 10 yd holding penalty. Then the running back,
#9, was taken down in the backfield, by "Wee-man" Burzuk, for another 10 yd
loss, to make 2nd & 30, on their own 10 yd marker. In desperation, the
Huskies' quarterback pitched to #33, who aired out a long pass, which was
intercepted by Gordie Walls, who took it
back to the Huskies' 30 yd line. With the Steelers still in
possession, the quarter ended with the Steelers on 2nd & 6....score 8-0.
The fourth quarter is where the Huskies began to unravel. Pasiuk connected
with "Chicken Legs" Morgan, for a 30 yd TD pass, and "Smitty" made good on
the conversion. With the Huskies in possession, the Steelers' defense
knocked them back for two consecutive losses of yds, making it 3rd & 15 on
the Olds 37 yd line. The Huskies punted the ball away, with a really good
kick, but "Wee-man" returned it, somehow breaking numerous tackles, and was
finally stopped on his own 41.
The next drive saw the Steelers make a couple of carries then a fumble,
which Olds recovered. The Huskies took the ball, and made a gain of 7 yds,
but were then were hit for a loss of 10 yds. Then "Smitty" intercepted a
pass, and ran it back to the Olds 42 yd line. The Huskies' defense then shut
down the Steelers offense, who punted with Olds receiving the kick, for no
gain on their own 20. The Steelers' defense were just too much for the
tiring Huskies. They were again pushed back for big losses, for 3rd & 18,
and they tried to go to #33 for a run, but he was stopped cold on their own
26 yd line. On the next Steelers' drive, Helmer ran up the middle for 7 yds,
then again for 8 more to the Huskies' 12.
Pasiuk then made a pitch to "Monster", who broke a tackle and found some
room on the outside, but was pushed out of bounds at the Olds 5
yd marker, for 2nd and 2. Helmer then punched in the TD from there,
and "Smitty" once again made good on the conversion. The Huskies took the
kickoff, but their drive was stopped dead with another Steelers
interception. The Steelers then ran the clock out on the Huskies, proving
who the best team in the league was, and advancing into the Tier 3
Provincial final next Saturday!!!
Week 8
RED DEER HORNETS
A gut wrenching 32-0 loss to the Steelers thoroughly dashed the Red Deer
Hornets
play-off hopes. The sun filled fall day seemed to mock them as they fought
to overcome
the flu and several injuries. The Steelers proved to be worthy opponents and
we wish them good luck in their next game. I am determine to keep my
last write up short and
sweet. So it is with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to all players
moving on next year. I also hope that the next season is as exciting and
rewarding as this one has been.
Standing
ovations and great big thank you's must be given out to all volunteers who
silently helped the season run smoothly. The Hornets team manager
Tammy MacDonald must be at the top of that list for our team. I hope
to see all of you next season and wish everyone good fortune in the coming
year. Go Hornets!!
STEELERS ADVANCE
TO LEAGUE FINAL!!
With a final score of 32-0, the Steelers advance to the league finals with
the convincing defeat of the previously undefeated Hornets. The game
initially proved to be a very close battle, with both teams going without a
score in the first quarter of play.
The Steelers then opened the scoring in the 2nd with a 60 yd drive, led by
quarterback Ben Pasiuk, using most of his offensive weapons. The drive was
finally capped of with a TD run by "Smitty" Smith, who also made good on the
conversion. The defense, led by "Pinky" Maki, and "Doc" Jonasson, contained
the Hornets running game to being virtually non-existent. Defensive linemen,
"Vitamin C" Godden, and "Ray-Ray" Seewalt, broke open the Hornets 0-line,
allowing Jesse Helmer to smash through, and sack the Hornets QB, causing a
huge turnover on the Hornets 42 yd line. On the ensuing play "Smitty" found
running room on the outside, and went in for a42 yd strike, and again made
good on the conversion. The half ended with a score of 24-0.
The 3rd quarter again saw some excellent defense with a turnover on the
Hornets 42 yd line on 3rd down. Then the Steelers offense then went to work
once again! "Monster" Perrot ran the ball 20 yd down field but had half his
yardage taken away because of a penalty after the play, and in true Steelers
fashion, the boys did not let that bother them! On the next two plays, they
continued to move the sticks down field, deep into Hornet territory, within
16 yd if the goal. Then Pasiuk handed the ball to "Monster", and he rumbled
like a freight train over Hornet defenders, ending the drive with another
score. "Smitty" then made good, again, with his magic green shoes, and
kicked the conversion...32-0
In the 4th quarter, The Steelers D proved to be far too much for a Hornets
team that seemed to be running out of gas. The Steelers held them to very
little yardage until the dying seconds of the game. In a last ditch effort
to get on the board, the Hornets QB aired one out, and their receiver showed
some great hands, to make a difficult catch! He streaked down field, and
came within striking distance of the Steelers goal line, but was caught by
two Steelers, who were just that much quicker than he. Alas, it turned out
to be the last play of the game, as the clock ran out on a hard fought
battle at Great Chief Park! A HUGE Thank you to all the parents, friends,
and family who came out to cheer our boys!!
Next up for the Steelers... THE LEAGUE FINAL!!!... A first for any Red Deer
Pee Wee Team!
LET'S GO STEELERS!!

Some

be prepared to cheer our men on LOUD AND PROUD!!!! GO STEELERS!!
HORNETS CAP OFF PERFECT SEASON!!
The buzzer has sounded for the Red Deer Hornets final regular season game.
Their 24-0 win over the visiting Sylvan Lake Bears solidified their number
one ranking
within the division. An impressive 7-0 record became a reality with Cody
Paish #5 as wide receiver and Karsten Burton #61 snapping the ball. Both
the Hornets offensive and defensive lines would not have been complete
without #67 Jared Ferguson's untiring dedication. We also hope to see Aric Dunn
#41 return to the line from the injured list. The Bears defense fought hard
but Cameron Brown #25, Amren Curtis #36, Sam Vesely #21 and Matthew Brischuk
#11 all managed to enter enemy territory and score. The entire defense
including Jameel Emery #43, Kade Damant #64 and Tanner Olstad # 10 should
take pride in their 3rd straight shutout.
Head Coach Corey Pusey along with
asst. coaches, Brad Olstad, Duane Brown, Rob
Mackie, Robin Curtis and Brad Vonkeman have spent a lot of time and energy
turning the Hornets into a winning machine. Taking the liberty to speak for
all the parents and players; our thanks and gratitude goes out to all the
coaches for a job well done. The first playoff game will be a rematch
against the Red Deer Steelers and if the first game was any indication it
should be a good one. Go Hornets!!

STEELERS WIN THE TURKEY BOWL... FINAL SCORE 44-0!
Coming off of last weeks tough loss to Lacombe, the Steelers worked hard all
week in practice, and it showed today against the Strathmore Spartans! A few
more of our rookies got starting nods today, due to a few of our regular
starters being away for the Thanksgiving Holiday. This included back-up
quarterback, Jesse Helmer, who led a potent Steelers offence to a stunning
victory. The Steelers defense also tightened up, and played
tremendously! Led by D-lineman, Brayden Docherty, they caused 4 forced
fumbles. The first, coming right off of the Spartans first possession, at
their 45 yd line, which was recovered by Graydon "Monster" Perrot.
Running back, Owen "Smitty" Smith, had a great game, scoring 3 touchdowns,
on 5, 11, and 23 yd, runs! Smitty also had a phenomenal kick return for 60
yd, where he was forced out of bounds at the Spartans 15 yd line. On the
ensuing play, "Monster" ran it in 15 yd for the major score! Late in the 3rd
quarter, Brandt "Wee-man" Burzuk, moved over to running back, and kept the
sticks moving on numerous runs. The "Wee-man" showed everyone just how
versatile and DANGEROUS he is, not only on defense, but on offence as well!
In the 4th quarter, Kayden "BBQ" Hall, recovered a Spartan fumble, which
somehow magically landed in his hands. Then with some great blocks, BBQ
found some running room and rumbled it in for a TD! Rookie cornerback, Josh
"Brownie" Brownell, played his best football yet, containing well out on the
corner, and making a thunderous tackle to end a Spartan drive! "Smitty", was
once again given kicking duties, and made 3 of 4 conversions after the TD's!
Of Special note....The ENTIRE O-line, centered by Brayden Wagenaar, who
opened up some big holes for our running backs to bust through!! Many thanks
to all the parents who made the LONG drive, to enthusiastically cheer on our
boys!! GREAT GAME STEELERS !!!
HORNETS: 5 - 0!!!
Mother
nature set the scene with frosty temperatures and slick snow covered
Week 4
HORNETS IMPROVE TO 4 - 0 ON THE
SEASON!!!
Cooler weather could not dampen the spirits of the Red Deer Hornets as they
went head to head with the Olds Huskies. The final score was 30 - 14
with all five touchdowns being scored by the Rocketman Sam Vesely #21.
Tanner Olstad #10, Keegan MacDougall #2 , Taylor Vida #17, Desemond Surerus
#4 were all brought down by the hard hitting Huskies but quickly bounced
back and rejoined the game, proving when the going gets tough the tough play
football. Jayden Johnston #66 and Lane Lyke #37 rang a few bells of
their own making several bone crunching hits throughout the game. Achieving
teeth jarring tackles did not satisfy Cameron Brown #25 who had a fourth
quarter interception which raised Hornet fans off their seats. In the
words of our commentator Dave Laplante, "TSN turning point"? Perhaps.
The Hornets next game is in Innisfail, and since there is nothing
better than a weekend of football and pumpkin pie, I expect all to be there.
STEELERS
FIGHT TO THE END IN LACOMBE NAIL BITER!!
Final score 26-16.
The game ended with the Steelers down but what a game it was! Gordie Walls
started the day off with a sweet catch made even sweeter by attaching the
first touchdown of the game to it. Hats off to Ray-Ray, “is there any other
way?” Sewalt, for showing us exactly how to block. Owen “Smitty” Smith then
topped it off by kicking it in and at this point many of the Steelers fans
lost their minds and one unnamed parent fainted dead away. To close off the
first quarter, the Steelers made a nice fumble recovery on the Lacombe 20
yard line. Other skillful fumble recoveries today were by #33 Graydon Perrot
on the Explosion’s 27 yard line and another by River “Doc” Jonasson on their
22 yard line. Graydon also made some fantastic runs for yardage in the last
quarter. Way to play Gray! There was some outstanding tackling going on by
Jesse Helmer, “Matt” Partridge, Cole Godden, Brayden “the Tank” Wagenaar,
Zach “Chicken legs” Morgan, Curls Hawkes and Bryce “Pinky” Maki. (Got to
wash these socks someday, Pinky!) Again standing out on the “Wee”-fensive
line was our #2, Brandt Burzak! Way to play guys!. These Steelers have to be
mentioned for having one of their best games so far: “J-Dub” Willliams,
Carter O’Donnell
and
Cole Layden. Way to play y’all! Thanks
to the entire Steelers GREEN TEAM, our coaches and the fans for some fine
football today. See you all at the Thanksgiving game in Strathmore!
Week 3
STEELERS
- BYE WEEK
HORNETS IMPROVE TO 3-0 TO START SEASON!!
The
Hornets third game of the season ended with a 22 - 0 victory over the
visiting Strathmore Spartans at Great Chief Park. A huge welcome
back goes out to Keegan MacDonald who returns to the line up fully recovered
from a knee injury. #11 Matthew Brischuk shined making several key
runs all afternoon wearing down the Spartan defence. The entire
offensive line rose to the occasion magnificently forming a unbreakable
blockade around all three Hornet quarterbacks, giving Ben Holmes, T.K.
Kunaka and Taylor Vida ample time and space to effectively run the offence.
Thanks to incredible tenacious blocking, wide receivers Nathan Bergeson #3
and Cody White #15 both had outstanding catch and run plays dicing and
dodging through the Strathmore defence, with Cody White scoring from 23
yards out. Nathan also proved size does not matter when you've got the
moves, effectively running through the Spartan defence to catch a touchdown
pass in the 4th quarter. Unfortunately it was called back on a holding
penalty. CFL coaches take note!!!! Our resident Sherman Tank, Jaydin
Vonkeman #65, had 16 quarterback sacks throughout the game! The
Hornets are back in action next Saturday against the visiting Olds Bulldogs
at Great Chief Park, see you all then. Go Hornets!!
Week 2
HORNETS - BYE WEEK
STEELERS SHUT OUT WETASKIWIN WILDCATS 42-0 IN GAME 2!!!
An amazing day weather wise was made even better by the GREEN TEAM playing
some amazing football!! A final score of 42-0 tells the whole story. Owen
Smith started us off with the first touchdown of the game and the crowd went
wild! Some excellent tackling skills were noted with Graydon Perrott,
Gordie Walls, Carson Stuve, Joshua Brownell, Bryce Maki and Cole Godden all
having EXCELLENT games. Good work guys! Our #62, Chase Harrison was in fine
form with some slick moves as was Brandt Burzak who ran a very good block
and recover. Who loves you
Wee
Man?
“WEE” do! A huge thank you to the entire Steelers Team for some very good
football today. And in the words of our very wise team manager, “IS THERE
ANYTHING BETTER THAN FOOTBALL?” I think not. GO GREEN!!!
Week 1
HORNETS START SEASON WITH A WIN!
With enthusiasm bordering on fanatical I welcome everyone to another year of
Hornets football. A beautiful day highlighted a final score of 46-38
in favor of the visiting Hornets. The Steelers defence was unable to
stop
Sam Vesely
from running an impressive 392 yards for all 7 touchdowns.
Travis Derksen had a quarter back sack which was one of many
great
plays
effectively stopping the Steelers offense. Ben Holmes refusing
to be outdone completed 2 field goals picking up an extra 4 points for the
Hornets.
If this game was any indication this season should be fantastic! Go
Hornets!
STEELERS FIGHT HARD IN SEASON OPENER!!
The amazing green team fought their hardest against their hard running
rivals the Hornets in the first game of the season. After the opening
jaw-dropping 51 yard touchdown ran by the very good Sam Vesely, the
Steelers fought hard to hold them with some impressive work by the entire
team! The Steelers showed they were a force to be reckoned with when they
responded with a "right back at ya" touchdown ran by Gordie Walls. A superb
Defense was again led by captain Cody "Curls" Hawkes with Curls getting 2
sacks, Defensive end River "Doc" Jonasson was out early in the game with a
leg injury but defense still had bodies of those pesky yellow Hornets flying
through the air! Ben Pasiuk showed off his amazing moves when he led a 4th
quarter drive to the Hornets 12 yard line. On the ensuing play he realized
he had no receiver. With the Hornets defense pressing hard Ben scrambled to
the outside, escaped the Hornets tackler and rumbled in for the touchdown!
Owen Smiths feet were a fast moving blur of green as again, he showed off
his skillful moves. Good Kicking Owen! The Steelers cheering section
themselves were a force to be reckoned, with many wrist injuries noted from
exuberant cow bell ringing and the sales of throat lozenges skyrocketing to
ease the pain of strained vocal cords! Thanks to the players of the entire
Steelers team and their working hard together for a good game. To the
Steelers parents for getting them there and most of all to our much
appreciated coaches for EVERYTHING they do! You are
very appreciated!
